Jessica Ganim

M.S. Student
Marine Biology & Ecology

Jessica is interested in understanding how coral resiliency in massive and branching species differs between polluted, higher stress inshore environments and less polluted offshore environments. Jessica aims to help inform which corals are best suited for propagation in nurseries for restoration, as well as to inform mitigation strategies for improving Biscayne Bay water quality. Her research focuses on the assessment of changes in coral physiology and symbiont communities across these environments, and her studies will supplement a collaborative effort with Mote Marine Lab and University of Hawaii to investigate coral protein biomarkers.

Prior to pursing her M.S. degree at UM, Jessica received her undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware, where she studied Marine Science and Writing and interned with the Marine Education, Research, and Rehabilitation (MERR) Institute. As an undergraduate, Jessica used remote sensing to study dinoflagellate distributions and red tide events along the California coastline with NASA’s Student Airborne Research Program. She also completed a 6,195 nautical-mile transatlantic passage on S/Y Argo, with the program Sea|mester, as part of her studies. Upon graduating with her Bachelor’s, Jessica worked with NASA DEVELOP to study predictors of flash drought events in the Ohio River Basin.
