The Coral Reef Futures Lab is led by University of Miami coral researcher, Dr. Andrew Baker. This lab was founded by Dr. Baker in 1999 and leads research in coral restoration and coral breeding interventions. The lab is home to coral tanks with native Carribean coral species, and conducts experiments on improving intervention practices. Over the decades, the lab has grown in size and coral facilities have expanded to maintain more coral.
The Coral Reef Futures Lab's Land-Based Coral Nursery is located in the University of Miami's Experimental Hatchery, across the road from the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmosphere, and Earth Sciences. The Land-Based Coral Nursery was established as an expansion to the lab in order to care for a growing number of coral colonies and coral fragments, and as microfragmenting became a fundamental method of coral restoration around 2010.
