Amalia Seigel

PhD student
Marine Biology & Ecology

Mali is from St. Louis, Missouri and received her BS in Marine Science with a minor in Chemistry from California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) in 2022. While attending CSUMB Mali investigated the effects of pollution levels on algal symbiont communities within Acropora hyacinthus, and the effect of temperature on coral physiology and gene expression in Pocillopora spp under Dr. Cheryl Logan. After graduating she worked as a lab technician in Dr. Liz Alter’s lab studying Rockfish Phylogeny and utilizing eDNA to track biodiversity through tidal cycles. Mali started pursuing her PhD in the Coral Reef Futures Lab in August of 2023 and plans to study the response of algal symbionts under heat stress using single cell transcriptomics.
